Antimicrobial Synergy of Silver-Platinum Nanohybrids With Antibiotics

Abstract: Various bacterial pathogens are responsible for nosocomial infections resulting in critical pathophysiological conditions, mortality, and morbidity. Most of the bacterial infections are associated with biofilm formation, which is resistant to the available antimicrobial drugs. As a result, novel bactericidal agents need to be fabricated, which can effectively combat the biofilm-associated bacterial infections. Herein, for the first time we report the antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of silver-platinum … Show more

“…Large scale application of nanotechnology include almost every aspect of life such as, textiles, paints, sensors, electrical equipments, agriculture, and even therapeutics (Jadoun et al, 2021). Smaller dimension and large surface area makes the nanoparticles ideal for functionalization with drugs, contrast agents and targeting ligands that is significant for biomedical applications (Aftab et al, 2018;Karmakar et al, 2021). Nanoparticles can be fabricated employing top-down and bottom-up approaches.…”

“…The inhibitory activity of Ag–PtNPs was more efficient against all pathogens than that of individual AgNPs or PtNPs. In the antimicrobial synergy tests, the activity of rifampicin and novobiocin combined with Ag–PtNPs showed a significant result against S. aureus . The bimetallic MNP-conjugated antibiotics showed interesting antimicrobial properties and may be a promising tool for developing novel agents.…”

“…Silver has been complexed with various other metals such as copper oxide [186], gold [187], platinum [188], etc., to produce AgNP nanohybrids with synergistic or unique properties that are superior to AgNPs alone. The nanohybrids improved the efficacy of antimicrobial agents [189] when used as carriers or in combination therapy. In an interesting study by Kazemzadeh-Narbat et al, titanium oxide nanotube implants consisting of multiple layers of thin films were synthesized and used for the time-dependent release of an AMP (HHC-36/KRWWKWWRR-NH 2 ).…”
