Antimicrobial resistance profiling and molecular typing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from a Malaysian teaching hospital

Abstract: The annual prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Malaysia has been estimated to be 30 % to 40 % of all S. aureus infections. Nevertheless, data on the antimicrobial resistance and genetic diversity of Malaysian MRSAs remain few. In 2009, we collected 318 MRSA strains from various wards of our teaching hospital located in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, and performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing on these strains. The strains were then molecularly characterized v… Show more

“…A similar observation was also reported among 124 MSSA and 34 MRSA isolates obtained in 2008 from HUSM, where all the isolates showed full sensitivity towards teicoplanin [19]. Teicoplanin-resistant isolates were also not detected among the 318 MRSA isolates collected in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) in 2009 [20].…”

“…2 In a molecular epidemiology study on methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolated from our medical center carried out in 2009, the strains were typed using PFGE and four major MRSA pulsotypes were identified. 4 We find the PFGE labor-intensive and the technique requires a long turnaround-time (TAT) before final results could be obtained. This will not be ideal in outbreak investigations as techniques with rapid TAT and simpler workflow may help reduce morbidity and mortality in infections.…”
