Antimicrobial Properties of Nanostructured Hydrogel Webs Containing Silver

Abstract: The need exists for biomaterials that prevent biofilm formation and associated infections. In this report, we have studied the synthesis, processing, and antimicrobial behavior of new silver-containing thermoplastic hydrogel nanofibrous webs. Thermoplastic hydrogels were synthesized from multiblock PEG-POSS polyurethanes (PEG: poly(ethylene gylcol); POSS: polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane) and electrospun into nanofibrous webs (diameter ∼150 nm), with or without AgNO 3 . The nanofibrous hydrogels exhibited unusua… Show more

“…This unusual hydrogel can therefore have interesting applications for wound dressings. 417 Despite these promising examples, silver integration does not always lead to better mechanical properties. Thus, Radheshkumar and Munstedt noticed a significant decrease in toughness and elongation strength when 2 wt % silver powder (2 × 10 7 μg kg −1 ) having a specific surface area of 0.78 m 2 g −1 is introduced into polyamide, even though the silver powder was well dispersed.…”

“…Due to their antibacterial activity, silver-nanoparticles (NPs) are used commonly in medical products and devices, food storage materials, cosmetics, various health care products, and industrial products. In medical applications, silver-NPs have been used for silver-based dressings [1,2], silver-coated catheters [3,4], silver-based hydrogel [5-7]. Silver-NP-hydrogel composites are composed of silver-NP and hydrogel which are used as carrier for silver particles.…”

“…Kim et al [14] studied the water resistance of the nanofiber web, obtained by electrospinning, based on the hybrid system poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/ POSS, made by incorporating silsesquioxane molecules onto hydrophilic PVA backbone. More recently, Wu et al [15] reported on the preparation of nanostructured fibrous hydrogel scaffolds of POSS-poly(ethylene glycol) hybrid thermoplastic polyurethanes incorporating Ag for antimicrobial applications. In particular, POSS nanocrystals, resulting from microphase separation, served as physical cross-linking points within the inorganic/organic hybrid network.…”
