Antimicrobial Properties of Extracellular Matrix Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering

Abstract: The necessity to manufacture graft materials with superior biocompatibility capabilities and biodegradability characteristics for tissue regeneration has led to the production of extracellular matrix- (ECM-) based scaffolds. Among their advantages are better capacity to allow cell colonization, which enables its successful integration into the tissue surrounding the area to be repaired. In addition, it has been shown that some of these scaffolds have antimicrobial activity, preventing possible infections; ther… Show more

“…Also, ECM‐based scaffolds from different tissues and organs regulate surgical infections because of their antimicrobial activity against microorganisms, which can enhance clinical prognosis. Despite these benefits, lots of work still need to be done to investigate other pathogens beyond bacteria 92 …”

“…These extracellular vesicles were found to be associated with favorable properties including enhanced angiogenic potential, stem cell recruitment and modulation of macrophage phenotype ( Hussey et al, 2019 ; Quijano et al, 2020 ). Furthermore, the presence of antimicrobial peptides within injectable decellularized ECM scaffolds has been documented and might play a significant role in future studies in the field of regenerative endodontics ( Jimenez-Gastelum et al, 2019 ; Wei et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Lastly, an indirect immunomodulatory effect of the ECM is given by its anti-microbial function. Indeed, many ECM components contains highly positively charged or hydrophobic peptides that are able to permeate bacteria membranes and kill them [ 197 ]. ECM-derived anti-microbial peptides (AMPs) are often released upon ECM degradation during inflammation.…”

“…The sensitivity of bacteria to specific AMPs depends on the composition of the bacteria cell wall. For example, E. faecalis , E. coli and P. aeruginosa are sensitive to the AMPs released from laminin, fibronectin and vitronectin [ 197 ]. In cancer, AMPs are often considered to be anti-tumor agents due to some direct cytotoxic actions on cancer cells or by enhancing tumor inflammation.…”
