Antimicrobial properties and thermal stability of polycarbonate modified with 1‐alkyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids

Abstract: Four water immiscible ionic liquids (ILs): 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-heptyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate have been synthesized. Polycarbonate (PC) films containing ILs were prepared by solvent casting from methylene chloride solutions. Scanning electron microscopy measurements showed the high homogeneity of PC/IL films with the IL content up to 4 wt %. The tendency to IL aggregatio… Show more

“…This is a major global public health concern and because of that the European Commission is committed focusing on this issue [ 9 ]. Besides, the antimicrobial agents are usually organic compounds that have limited applications due to their low heat resistance, high decomposability and short life [ 10 ].In this regard, the inorganic biocides have acquired importance, but they are commonly based on nanoparticles which have effects on environment and human health [ 11 15 ]. Therefore, the development of new inorganic biocides without antimicrobial resistance or adverse effects on living organisms, humans or environment is absolutely essential.…”

“…However, some recent articles can be found in literature about the modification of PC with IL, and not only with the modification of PC by covalent groups linked. Rogalsky et al . incorporated a series of imidazolium salts by casting and verified a reduction on thermal decomposition in comparison with neat PC.…”
