Antimicrobial Hydrogel Contact Lens Containing Alginate

Abstract: Biocompatible hydrogels from 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomer containing various amount of alginate in the presence and absence of hydrophilic methacrylic acid (MAA) were synthesized in order for biomedical application. The antimicrobial effect and interaction with proteins for hydrogels were investigated in this study. MAA was introduced because it was expected to increase the amount of water content in the polymer which is an important factor for biocompatibility, and alginate was expected to enhan… Show more

“…Therefore, the main factor affecting the extent of protein adsorption may be the interaction between MAA and protein and the protein's size. The recent my study, increasing MAA content in hydrogels with alginate resulted in increased lysozyme adsorption as this result [45]. The water content, which has been reported as a determining factor may not be important.…”

“…The antimicrobial agent can be introduced during the process directly in the bulk with the raw material or by an immobilization on the package's surface. [6][7][8][9][10][11] Several kinds of antimicrobial molecules from different families have been used, such as acids, [12][13][14][15][16] amino acids, 11,17 alcohols, terpenes, [18][19][20] peptides, proteins, [21][22][23][24] polysaccharides 25,26 antiseptics, [27][28][29][30][31][32][33] metal oxides, and [34][35][36] metal salts.
