Microbial infection accounts for many dental diseases and treatment failure. Therefore, the antibacterial properties of dental biomaterials are of great importance to the long-term results of treatment. Silver-based biomaterials (AgBMs) have been widely researched as antimicrobial materials with high efficiency and relatively low toxicity. AgBMs have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial properties, including penetration of microbial cell membranes, damage to genetic material, contact killing, and dysfunction of bacterial proteins and enzymes. In particular, advances in nanotechnology have improved the application value of AgBMs. Hence, in many subspecialties of dentistry, AgBMs have been researched and employed, such as caries arresting or prevention, root canal sterilization, periodontal plaque inhibition, additives in dentures, coating of implants and anti-inflammatory material in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This paper aims to provide an overview of the application approaches of AgBMs in dentistry and present better guidance for oral antimicrobial therapy via the development of AgBMs.

The study aimed to synthesize calcium fluoride (CaF 2 ) nanoparticles and compare the push-out bond strength and viscosity of experimental adhesive (EA) and EA with 5 wt.% CaF 2 (CAF-5%). The CaF 2 nanoparticles were synthesized and then characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and micro-Raman spectroscopies. CaF 2 nanoparticles were incorporated in the adhesives to yield two groups; gp-1: EA-CAF-0% (control) and gp-2: CAF-5%. Canals of 20 teeth (N = 20) were prepared, and then yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) ceramic posts were cemented. Adhesives were assessed for push-out bond strength and rheology. CaF 2 filler was seen as irregularly shaped agglomerates on SEM. The EDX analysis demonstrated the presence of calcium and fluoride for the CAF-5% group. The FTIR indicated characteristic bands for CaF 2 containing materials. The micro-Raman spectra of CaF 2 nanoparticles demonstrated the presence of CaF 2 by showing strong bands at 840 cm À1 , 1380 cm -1, and 1400 cm À1 for fluorine and 950 cm À1 and 1080 cm À1 for calcium ions. The highest push-out bond strength values were obtained for CAF-5% group samples (cervical: 9.67 ± 1.46 MPa, apical: 8.66 ± 1.24 MPa), and both adhesives revealed adhesive-dentin interfacial fractures. The CAF-5% adhesive also revealed comparable rheological properties with the controls. The addition of CaF 2 nanoparticles in the adhesive improved its push-out bond strength to Y-TZP post and root dentin, although CAF-5% showed reduced viscosity on rheological assessment (compared with the controls).

Introduction/Objectives. Enterococcus faecalis has been implicated in infections of treated root canals. Current irrigants and intracanal medicaments cannot eliminate E. faecalis completely from the root canal. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) prevents caries by promoting remineralization and exerting an antibacterial effect. Studies suggest that SDF may possess antibacterial properties against E. faecalis. The purpose of this review is to systematically and critically analyze the literature, focusing on the use of SDF as an intracanal medicament or irrigant, when compared to other antibacterial agents. Data/Sources. The focused question was “Is the antibacterial effect of SDF against E. faecalis better than other intracanal medicaments and irrigants?” Using the keywords ((silver diamine fluoride) AND (Enterococcus faecalis)) AND ((sodium hypochlorite) OR (NaOCl) OR (chlorhexidine) OR (calcium hydroxide) OR (Ca(OH)2)), an electronic search was conducted on the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. The clinical trial registers ClinicalTrials.gov and CONTROL were also searched using the same keywords. General characteristics and outcomes were extracted, and quality of the studies was assessed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Laboratory studies in Endodontology (PRILE) guidelines. Study Selection. Six articles (five in vitro studies and one ex vivo study) were included in this systematic review. In the majority of the studies, SDF had equal or better antibacterial efficacy against E. faecalis compared to calcium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, and chlorhexidine. However, the majority of the studies did not fulfill several items in the PRILE criteria and had numerous sources of bias. Conclusions. Within the limitations of the systematic review and the studies reviewed, SDF may be effective against E. faecalis and therefore could be used as an intracanal medicament and/or irrigant to prevent reinfections of the root canals and improve the outcomes of endodontic treatment. However, animal and clinical studies should be carried out to determine the efficacy of SDF in endodontics. Trial Registration. The protocol for this review was registered on PROSPERO.
