Antimicrobial and anti-adhesive potential of a biosurfactant Rufisan produced by Candida lipolytica UCP 0988

Abstract: In the last years, researches developed with biosurfactants for application in the medical area have been revealing the promising biological activities of these biomolecules. In this work the antimicrobial and anti-adhesive properties of a biosurfactant Rufisan isolated from the yeast Candida lipolytica UCP 0988, growth in a medium supplemented with ground nut refinery residue was determined against several microorganisms. The biosurfactant was able to reduce the water surface tension from 70 to 25.3 mN/m and … Show more

“…Yarrowia lipolytica seems to produce a variety of different emulsifiers, for example Liposan isolated from cultures grown on hexadecane, Yansan from cultures grown on glucose or Rufisan from cultures grown on soybean oil refinery residue (Amaral et al, 2006;Cirigliano & Carman, 1985;Fontes et al, 2010;Rufino et al, 2011).…”

Micrococcus lysodeikticus [13].…”

“…The authors determined a surface tension reduction of 59% when palm oil was added at 2 kg/m 3 .day with a cycle time of 2 days/cycle. Rufino et al (2011) Sarubbo et al (2007), Candida lipolytica synthesized a surfactant in a cultivation medium supplemented with canola oil and glucose as carbon sources after 48 h of fermentation. The cellfree broth was particularly influenced by the addition of salt, the pH and temperature depending on the emulsified substrate (hexadecane or a vegetable oil).…”
