Antimicrobial agents used in the control of periodontal biofilms: effective adjuncts to mechanical plaque control?

Abstract: The control of biofilm accumulation on teeth has been the cornerstone of periodontal disease prevention for decades. However, the widespread prevalence of gingivitis suggests the inefficiency of self-performed mechanical plaque control in preventing gingival inflammation. This is particularly relevant in light of recent evidence suggesting that long standing gingivitis increases the risk of loss of attachment and that prevention of gingival inflammation might reduce the prevalence of mild to moderate periodont… Show more

“…The use of herbal dentifrices led to a considerable reduction in dental plaque accumulation both on smooth and approximal tooth surfaces [21]. Probably, the active ingredients of the herbal dentifrices penetrate the biofilm and prevent plaque accumulation, thereby potentially preventing the colonization of the oral bacteria on the tooth surfaces [23]. However, very few studies [4,13,15] have evaluated the microbial efficacy of commercially available herbal dentifrices against oral microflora.…”

“…Mechanical control is the most eff ective method for the prevention and removal of biofi lm, but it is not always adequately performed. Th us, antimicrobial substances have been used for chemical control of dental biofi lm, as a supplementary manner to mechanical procedures [1][2][3] .…”

“…All of them came to similar conclusions, which supported the prescription of mouthrinses as a useful tool for a better oral health. 7,8,12 Therefore, it is expected that in the near future the number of dentists who prescribe mouthrinses in Brazil will be higher.…”

“…On the other hand, there are many reports about clinical and microbiological additional benefits associated to mouthrinse use. 7,8,9,10,11,12,13 Another reason that justifies the use of mouthrinses is that this system can deliver an antimicrobial agent in different areas in the mouth that are colonized by microorganisms.…”
