Antimicrobial activity of intracanal medications against both Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans biofilm

Abstract: Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans have been associated with cases of secondary and persistent root canal infections, been resistant to calcium hydroxide. So, the evaluation of the susceptibility of these microorganisms biofilms to new drugs is an important practice for establishing the best drug and consequently success of treatment. For this, in vitro biofilm formation of E. faecalis and C. albicans was induced separately on blocks obtained from bovine teeth. After the period of specimen incubation f… Show more

“…Thirty bovine incisors with fully developed roots were selected and positioned laterally. Then, specimens of dentin discs were made according to previously used methodologies (Zancan et al, 2016(Zancan et al, , 2019. After removing the crowns at the cementoenamel junction, a trephine drill (4x4 mm) attached to a handpiece was positioned perpendicular to these roots was used to obtain circular sections from the mesial to distal portion of the cervical and middle thirds of the roots, under abundant irrigation, yielding four dentin discs per tooth.…”

“…Studies show the inhibitory effect of green tea on the growth of S. mutans [29][30][31] , suggesting that its local application can reduce the acidity of saliva and bacterial plaque, acting as a preventive measure against caries 29 . However, the association with Ca(OH) 2 did not improve the antimicrobial activity against E. faecalis, compared to the positive control.…”

Vápnik v hydroxide vápenatom podporuje adherenciu Candidy ku kolagénu, vysoké pH zas podporuje Candidu k tvorbe hýf, ktoré penetrujú hlboko do dentínových tubulov, čím zvyšujú infekčnosť tohto mikroorganizmu [41,43].…”
