Antimicrobial Activity of Dequalinium Chloride against Leading Germs of Vaginal Infections

Abstract: Dequalinium chloride (CAS 522-51-0) and povidone iodine (CAS 25655-41-8) are known as antiseptic agents and used in the local treatment of vaginal infections. Clotrimazole (CAS 23593-75-1) is an anti-fungal drug and applied primarily in the therapy of vulvo-vaginal candidiasis and to a lesser extent in bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. However, antimicrobial activities of those three agents in comparison to each other have not been reported so far. To address this issue the antimicrobial activities of th… Show more

“…DQC is an anti-infective agent with a different mode of action, targeting the microbial cytoplasm membrane and leading to release of cellular components [18]. Due to this general mode of action, DQC comprises a broader spectrum of antimicrobial activity than most antibiotics and exerts a rapid microbiocidal action against a variety of pathogens [16,17]. We have shown in our study that DQC is as effective as one of the recommended regimens with maybe a faster recovery of the normal vaginal flora.…”

“…Dequalinium chloride (DQC), a quaternary ammonium compound, has a wide range of antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, fungi and protozoa [16,17]. Its primary mode of action is the disruption of cell permeability and the subsequent loss of enzymatic activity [18].…”
