Antimicrobial Activity and Physicochemical Properties of Antibiotic Pastes Used In Regenerative Endodontics

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pH, solubility and antimicrobial action of Calcium Hydroxide Paste (CH), Double Antibiotic Paste (metronidazole+ciprofloxacin-DAP), calcium hydroxide added to DAP (CH/DAP) and Triple Antibiotic Paste (metronidazole + ciprofloxacin+minocycline-TAP). pH (n=10) were measured by pHmeter. Root canals of acrylic teeth (n=10) were filled with the above-mentioned intracanal-dressings, immersed in ultrapure water, and solubility was measured by the difference between the in… Show more

“…do Couto et al stated that the disinfection of the immature teeth in REP can be judiciously achieved with the use of triple antibiotic paste (TAP) 6 . Although the current clinical recommendations by the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) for REP suggests the use of TAP or calcium hydroxide, when comparatively analysing, TAP and double antibiotic paste showed increased antimicrobial activity compared to calcium hydroxide 7 .…”

“…Another recent study has demonstrated through confocal microscopy that Ca(OH) 2 had a low level of antimicrobial action against E . faecalis biofilm (Zancan et al, 2019b). Both DAP and TAP were effective against this biofilm after seven days of incubation on dentine discs (Zancan et al, 2019b).…”

“…A variety of decontamination protocols for RET have been reported. Most use sodium hypochlorite as irrigant solution and triple (metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and minocycline) (TAP) (7,9) or double (metronidazole/ ciprofloxacin) (DAP) (10,11) antibiotic paste as intracanal medicament. Both substances have antimicrobial activity against endodontic pathogens (10)(11)(12)(13), which allows repair of apical tissues, cellular induction and reestablishment of root formation (10).…”
