RESUMO:A família Annonaceae possui representantes de grande interesse medicinal e o gênero Xylopia é um dos que merecem destaque. Composta por aproximadamente 160 espécies distribuídas na América do Sul, América central, África e Ásia, as espécies desse gênero podem ser arbustivas ou arbóreas. No Brasil são encontradas nas regiões Norte, Nordeste, CentroOeste e Centro Sul. Este gênero produz uma variedade de metabólitos incluindo alcalóides, amidas, lignóides, acetogeninas e terpenóides e têm sido investigados como fonte potencial de acetogeninas, compostos esses que apresentam uma ampla variedade de propriedades biológicas com destaque para: citotóxica, antitumoral, antiparasitária, antimicrobial, inseticida e antimalarial. Neste estudo, efetuou-se uma revisão das principais espécies de Xylopia encontradas no Brasil, já estudadas e descritas na literatura, abordando os aspectos químico-farmacológicos, destacando os constituintes químicos isolados bem como a ação farmacológica evidenciada. Palavras-chave:Xylopia, medicina popular, composição química, efeito farmacológico. ABSTRACT: Plants of the Xylopia Genus: Chemical Composition and PharmacologicalPotential. The family Annonaceae has representatives of great medical interest, and the Xylopia species deserves attention. The Xylopia genus is composed by approximately 160 species, with geographic distribution in tropical and subtropical regions of America, Africa and Asia. This genus can present shrubs or trees. In Brazil, they can be found at the North, North-west, Central-West and Central-South Regions. The phytochemical investigations resulted mainly in the isolation of alkaloids, diterpenos, quinolines and acetogenins, with the latter presenting very interesting biological properties such as the cytotoxic, antiprotozoal and the insecticide activities.This study aimed to review the botanical, chemical and pharmacological aspects of the Xylopia genus found in Brazil, highlighting the chemical components, as the well-known pharmacological effect .

Hura crepitans seed oil (HCSO) remains under-utilized, largely due to the scarcity in data regarding its biochemical properties. To investigate the functional and pro-inflammatory responses to HCSO, twenty-four male rats were grouped into four and received compounded diets containing 5%-HCSO; 10%-HCSO; 15%-HCSO; and 15%-AHO (as control) for eight weeks. The functional responses and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and their receptors were appraised. The organ function biomarkers in rats fed with HCSO-supplemented diets were statistically similar to those of control rats, except for uric acid and creatine levels, which were significantly lower in the HCSO-fed groups, and the urea level, which was elevated in all HCSO-fed groups. Also, HCSO significantly downregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-6) and their receptors (IL-1R and IL-6R), when compared to the control group. Our results highlight the reno- and cardio-protective potentials of HCSO, as well as its anti-inflammatory potentials.

Specific to the West African sub-region, previous studies involving fruit, stem, and bark of Tetrapleura tetraptera as well as seeds of Monodora myristica have largely focused on phytochemical properties of aqueous and methanolic and ethanolic extracts. To supplement existing information, the chemical composition, antibacterial efficacy (tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus), and antioxidant capacity (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH∙) radical scavenging, ferric reducing power, and total antioxidant capacity) of essential oil and oleoresin extracted from T. tetraptera fruit and M. myristica seeds cultivated in Southeast Nigeria, were studied. Essential oil and oleoresin were respectively extracted by steam distillation and aqueous maceration. By way of gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis, the chemical compounds from essential oil and oleoresin from M. myristica and T. Tetraptera samples totaled 6 and 5, as well as 27 and 16, respectively. Besides the oleoresin of M. myristica and the essential oil of T. tetraptera showing some resistance against S. aureus, the oleoresins seemed highly susceptible to E. coli—all of which demonstrated concentration-dependence to the antibacterial inhibition zone. Scavenging DPPH radical, reduction power activity, and total antioxidant capacity increased with essential oil and oleoresin extracts' concentrations, which positions M. myristica and T. tetraptera spices as very promising for food preservation, especially against autoxidation and microbial spoilage.
