Antimicrobial acrylic materials with in situ generated silver nanoparticles

Abstract: AgNP-PMMA demonstrated a tremendously broad-spectrum and long-intermediate-term antimicrobial effect with comparable mechanical properties to control PMMA. Current efforts are focused on further improving mechanical properties by reducing AgNP loading and assessing fatigue properties.

“…The varied and broad spectrum activity of NanoAg in vitro has been reported before. 41 Based on results of the present study, the strong antimicrobial activity of NanoAg-IS-BOA in comparison to NanoAg-I-BOA and PMMA, regarding other studies which have shown considering non-detrimental effects of NanoAg-IS-BOA on mechanical properties of acrylic, 22,34 it seems clinically advantageous to use NanoAg-IS-BOA and benefit their antimicrobial properties. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the proper concentrations for final products.…”

“…This NanoAg-IS-PMMA showed excellent antimicrobial properties against planktonic bacterial cells growth of A. bumannii, P. aeruginosa, P. mirabilis, S. aureus and S. mutans. 34 Our data demonstrated the NanoAg-IS-BOA exhibited a high antimicrobial efficacy, even if the content of silver nanoparticles in NanoAg-IS-BOA is as low as 0.5% w/w all test bacteria in saliva are inhibited over 53.2 to 98.4% within 4 weeks. This low amount of NanoAg does not have any adverse effect on the mechanical properties of the polymer.…”

“…Silver nanoparticles are well known as one of the most universal antimicrobial substances in the field of biology and medicine due to their strong biocidal effect against microbial species, which has been used for centuries to prevent and treat various diseases, most notably infections. 14 Silver nanoparticles also reported to possess anti-fungal, 15 anti-inflammatory, 16 anti-viral, 17 anti-angiogenesis 18 and anti-platelet activity. 19 Recently, the development of silver nanoparticles is expanding.…”

“…59,65 Noble metals Silver (Ag) Several studies found that addition of silver NPs (AgNPs) to denture base acrylic resin displayed antifungal properties, [66][67][68][69] especially at high concentrations, 70 and acted like a latent antifungal material with low-releasing Ag + . 71 On the contrary, Wady et al 72 found that incorporating silver NPs in PMMA did not affect the adhesion of C. albicans and biofilm accumulation.…”
