Antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities of aqueous extract of Hericium erinaceus in experimental diabetic rats

Abstract: BackgroundHericium erinaceus, as a commonly used medicine or food, has attracted much attention due to its health effects when used as a home remedy for some diseases. The aim of this work was to investigate the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of aqueous extract of Hericium erinaceus (AEHE) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats.MethodsDiabetes was induced in Wistar rats by the administration of STZ (55 mg/kg BW.) intraperitoneally. AEHE (100 and 200 mg/kg BW.) was administered for a period of 28… Show more

“…It even led to a significant decrease in serum glucose levels and a significant increase in serum insulin [94]. Panax ginseng (Araliaceae) too was found to have antioxidant properties as its component ginsenoside helped restore glutathione and MDA levels in the eye and kidney comparable to those found in the control rats.…”

“…Nutrient media containing 200 and 500 mg mL −1 organic selenium were prepared by the addition of emulsion of Selol (20 and 50 g kg −1 , respectively) to nutrient medium with the following composition: glucose 10.0 g L −1 , yeast extract 10.0 g L −1 , casein peptone 10.0 g L −1 and KH 2 PO 4 1.0 g L −1 . The concentration of glucose was lowered because in the presence of a high concentration of this carbon source a preferential utilization of glucose rather than carbon source as oil can appear (carbon catabolite repression) . An emulsion of selenite triglycerides was prepared according to the procedure described previously .…”

“…In recent years, much attention has been devoted to polysaccharides produced by the submerged cultures of various fungal species. Their anti‐cancer, immunostimulatory and hypoglycaemic effects are known . Polysaccharides are structural components of the fungal cell wall.…”
