Antigens of the major histocompatibility complex in patients with chronic discoid lupus erythematosus

Abstract: The frequencies of the major histocompatibility complex class I, class II and class III antigens were determined in 130 patients (88 women and 42 men) with chronic discoid lupus erythematosus, and compared with those of 764 healthy controls. A significant increase in HLA-B7 (38.0% in the patients vs. 25.8% in the control group), HLA-B8 (29.5% vs. 17.4%), HLA-Cw7 (58.9% vs. 26.1%), HLA-DR2 (46.9% vs. 29.7%), HLA-DR3 (32.0% vs. 19.4%), HLA-DQw1 (76.6% vs. 60.5%), and a decrease in HLA-A2 (41.9% vs. 55.7%) was fo… Show more

“…An association with HLA-B7, B8, Cw7, DR2, DR3 and DQw1 has been described, along with an increased risk of developing the disease in certain gene combinations, such as HLA-Cw7, DR3, DQw1 and HLA B7, HLA-Cw7 and DR3 [13]. …”

“…The class II MHC genes, HLA‐DRB1 and HLA‐DQ, have been associated in autoantibody production. These genes are extremely polymorphic, and allelic variants from these loci have been associated with CDLE in white European patients 9,10 …”

“…In CDLE, an association between HLA‐Cw6 and CDLE has not been documented in the Japanese population, and the HLA‐A33‐B44‐DRB1*1302 haplotype showed a positive association. Reports from European countries suggest that combinations were found in 17.2% of HLA‐Cw7, DR3, DQw1 and HLA‐B7, Cw7 and DR3 were found in 17.2% of CDLE and in 2.3% of the controls, 11 and the association of CCLE with certain HLA class II alleles points to an involvement of HLA‐DQ and/or ‐DR molecules (HLA‐DRB1*1601‐DQA*0102) in the pathogenesis of CDLE, 12 which is different from the present Japanese result.…”
