Antigens of Murine Melanoma and Their Cross-Species Reactivity

Abstract: Many investigators have taken a two-stage approach to the study of tumor antigens. The first is the evaluation of antigens produced by animal tumors and the second is the determination of the extent to which animal antigens have relevant human homologs. Accordingly, we discuss the known protein antigens of murine melanoma with emphasis on those expressed by more than one species. These include six mouse-specific and five cross-species antigens, and 1 human antigen transfected into mouse cells. Of the five cros… Show more

“…Within the field of melanoma, a great deal of data has been accumulated on cross-species antigens (review, Gersten and Hearing, 1992a), especially B700. Thus, om initial experiments, which suggested that B700 might be eliminated intact from tumor into the urine, were of particular interest in the context of biomarkers (Farzaneh et al, 1991b).…”

“…Lastly, an antigenically and structurally similar protein to B700, termed H700, has been detected in the serum and urine of melanoma patients (Tomecki et al, 1980). There is as yet no animal model for studying urinary excretion of melanoma antigens; the subject of cross species melanoma antigens has been recently reviewed (Gersten and Hearing, 1992a). The complete sequence of I3700 is not yet known, but amino acid analysis (Marchalonis et al, 1984), N-terminal sequence (Marchalonis et al, 1984), and serological cross-reactivity studies (Gersten et al, 1991) place B700 in the serum albumin fam-ily.…”
