Antigenic Variation of Avian Influenza A(H5N6) Viruses, Guangdong Province, China, 2014–2018

Abstract: Market surveillance showed continuing circulation of avian influenza A(H5N6) virus in live poultry markets in Guangdong Province in 2017, despite compulsory vaccination for avian influenza A(H5Nx) and A(H7N9). We analyzed H5N6 viruses from 2014–2018 from Guangdong Province, revealing antigenic drift and decreased antibody response against the vaccine strain in vaccinated chickens.

“…Our study was done retrospectively, but showed potential for early warning for vaccine escape variants or circulation of viruses with molecular markers for human infections or antiviral resistance ( Bai 2019 ). With the development of next-generation sequencing, such public health translation of pathogen genomic data can become a new routine, provided costs of sequencing and analytical processes is developed for such environments ( Aarestrup and Koopmans 2016 ; Grubaugh et al.…”

“…Therefore, validation of pooled samples or novel sample types that can be used to monitor groups or populations of humans, animals or a certain geographical area. In Asia, environmental surveillance of live animal markets is routinely implemented as main means of monitoring of Avian Influenza viruses ( Bai et al ., 2019 ; Henning et al ., 2019 ; Khan et al ., 2018 ). Various surfaces, such as poultry cages, chopping boards and defeathering machines, are sampled and tested on a regular basis as an indirect measure of poultry infections and public health risk.…”

“… 2 The World Health Organization estimates that China accounts for 14% and 5.1% of the global burden of H. influenzae type b infections and deaths, respectively, and 12% and 3.6% of Streptococcus pneumoniae infections and deaths, respectively. 8 10 It is also estimated that >80% of all rotavirus-related deaths involve children in low-income countries of South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. 11 In China, approximately 47.8% of hospitalizations in children <5 years old are attributable to rotavirus.…”
