“…This surface coat is morphologically similar to the coat observed on the surface of Trypanosoma brucei, which has been shown to be a single glycoprotein that undergoes antigenic variation (1, 31). The morphological similarity of the surface coat and the existence of an antigenic variation in P. knowlesi infections suggested the hypothesis that the surface coat of merozoites was, as in trypanosomes, the variant antigen and was therefore related to the antigen detected on the schizont-infected erythrocyte (4).
