Antifungal properties of volatile organic compounds produced by Daldinia eschscholtzii MFLUCC 19-0493 isolated from Barleria prionitis leaves against Colletotrichum acutatum and its post-harvest infections on strawberry fruits

Abstract: Fungal endophytes are microorganisms living symbiotically with a host plant. They can produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to isolate endophytic fungi from Barleria prionitis plants grown in Thailand and to investigate the antifungal properties of their VOCs against Colletotrichum acutatum, a causal agent of anthracnose disease on post-harvest strawberry fruits. A total of 34 endophytic fungi were isolated from leaves of B. prionitis. The VOCs produced fr… Show more

“…According to the literature, VOCs previously detected for D. eschscholtzii GU11N include alcohols, chromones, and other aromatic compounds, dienes, ketones, aldehydes, and sesquiterpenes. 38,39,52 Among the volatile compounds that have shown statistical significance, we found α-cubebene (18), α-bisabolene, and guaizulene. These terpenes can cause damage to hyphal membranes and suppress conidial formation in A. niger.…”

“…Fungal endophytes from the genus Daldinia inhibit the growth of the plant pathogens Colletotrichum acutatum and Sclerotium rolfsii [ 78 , 79 ]. Daldinia eschscholtzii isolated from ginger, Zingiber officinale , and Stemona root, Stemona tuberosa , was found to produce 60 identifiable compounds, the major ones being elemicin (24%), benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal (8%), ethyl sorbate (7%), methyl geranate (6%), trans-sabinene hydrate (5%) and 3,5-dimethyl-4-heptanone (5%) [ 79 ]. Elemicin is reported as an effective antifungal against Colletotrichum gloeosporoides , C. nymphaeae and C. musae [ 79 ].…”

“…This institute uses these PGPB to form a biofertilizer commercially available in the local market with the trade name of Faslon ka Jraseemi Teka (FKJT). The inhibition potential of PGPB strains against N. rubicola was evaluated using in-vitro dual culture techniques (Khruengsai et al, 2021). In this experiment, a solidified PDA Petri plate was an experimental replicate/unit.…”
