Antifungal activity of volatile compounds produced by endophytic Bacillus subtilis DZSY21 against Curvularia lunata

Abstract: Purpose: To screen endophytic Bacillus producing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with antifungal activity, and to explore their biocontrol properties toward the growth and pathogenicity of Curvularia lunata. Methods: Two-sealed-base-plate assays were used to estimate the antifungal activities of Bacillus strains against C. lunata. Conjoint analysis of solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and antagonistic experiments were used to identify the VOCs responsible for the antifungal act… Show more

“…Using a modified dual culture (cross-streak) method, the antagonistic activity of endophytic bacterial strains against virulent phytopathogens ( Alternaria solani , Rhizoctonia solani , Fusarium oxysporum and Ustilaginoidea virens ) was examined in vitro [ 24 ]. On potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates, a 5-mm disc of freshly cultured fungal cultures was implanted with a bacterial culture introduced on one side of the fungal plug.…”

“…Endophytic PGPR Bacillus subtilis strain DZSY21 was reported to inhibit the mycelia growth and conidial sporulation of fungal pathogen Curvularia lunata by producing VOCs like 2-methylbutyric acid, 2-heptanone, and isopentyl acetate. Application of VOCs in maize leaves was observed to reduce disease indexes from 60.52 to 26.64%, further isopentyl acetate showed enhancement in accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in conidia [ 170 ]. VOCs (2,5-dimethylpyrazine and benzothiazole) produced by endophytic PGPR B. velezensis ZSY-1 was found to have strong antifungal activity toward Alternaria solani and Botrytis cinerea [ 171 ].…”

“…Also, the derivative of 1, 3-butylene glycol exhibited potent antibacterial and antifungal activities [39]. Similarly, the compound isopentyl acetate from endophytic Bacillus subtilis inhibits the growth and sporulation of Curvularia lunata [40]. Cymene isomers are reported to possess insecticidal and repellent properties [41].…”
