Antifungal activity of lichen compounds against dermatophytes: a review

Abstract: Summary The growth rate inhibition of dermatophytes by compounds extracted by acetone, ethanol, methanol and water derived from representatives of several lichen genera (e.g. Caloplaca, Everniastrum, Heterodermia, Hypotrachyna, Platismatia and Ramalina) were compared on the basis of a worldwide review of published research. The examined dermatophytes included Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum audouinii, M. canis, M. gypseum, M. nanum, Trichophyton longifusus, T. mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, T. tonsurans and … Show more

“…The genus Ramalina Ach. is one of the best known lichen genera, easily recognized and widely studied by scientists in various fields of research, including biomonitoring of environmental changes ( Agnan et al 2016 ; López Berdonces et al 2016 ), evaluation of impacts of industrial activities to the environment ( Domínguez-Morueco et al 2015 ), biotoxicity ( Anar et al 2015 ), use in cancer therapy ( Lee et al 2016 ; Suh et al 2017 ) and other human diseases ( Kim et al 2018 ; Furmanek et al 2019 ), biotechnologies ( Biosca et al 2016 ), decontamination ( Candan et al 2017 ), and even in ethnological studies of rural human populations ( Devkota et al 2017 ).…”

“…Encouraged by these results, the next step was the structure elucidation by standard procedure after the bioactive compound purification. Previous work with the lecanoric acid has demonstrated the chemical shifts of compounds in NMR [28][29][30] . The NMR, microcrystal and TLC results confirmed the presence of lichen compound lecanoric acid.…”

“…The fungal metabolites tested here showed no activity against the evaluated microorganisms. According to Furmanek et al (2019), the microdilution method assesses the effectiveness of concentrations of used substances . In this study, the Gurgel et al 89 crude aqueous extract to access the antimicrobial activity was used, and the substances that could present the inhibition of microbial growth were probably not in an effective concentration (not detected by this method), thus it is necessary to concentrate the metabolites in order to access this biological activity.…”
