The development of Eucalyptus urophylla in dryland ecosystems plays an important contribution to support climate change mitigation and renewable energy diversification. However, the information about the potential of E. urophylla for carbon reduction and energy production is rarely documented, even though it is necessary as fundamental considerations to determine the best strategy for sustainable natural resources management, primarily in dryland ecosystems. This study aimed to quantify the carbon storage and energy production of E. urophylla established in dryland ecosystems at East Nusa Tenggara. The study site is located in a eucalyptus plantation managed by Timor Tengah Selatan Forest Management Unit. Destructive sampling was conducted on 25 sample trees that were evenly distributed from small to big ones. The percentage of carbon content in every tree component, namely stem, branch, and foliage, was determined using elemental analysis, while the calorific value of each tree component was analyzed using a bomb calorimeter. Carbon storage in each component was calculated by multiplying biomass and the percentage of carbon content, while the energy production was computed by multiplying high heating value and biomass from every tree component. The results found the mean carbon storage of E. urophylla in the study site was 55.51 kg tree-1 with a minimum of 6.34 kg tree-1 and a maximum of 184.76 kg tree-1. The percentage of carbon content in the foliage was lower than other tree components by approximately 34.1%. Interestingly, the calorific value of foliage was relatively higher than stem and branch with around 5,252 kcal kg-1. The energy production of E. urophylla ranged from 252.6 to 7,813.3 MJ tree-1 with an average of 2,357.87 MJ tree-1. According to the results, this study concluded the development of E. urophylla in dryland ecosystems demonstrated a meaningful contribution to carbon absorption and energy production at East Nusa Tenggara.

Nanoemulsion is a form of nano pesticide that has been widely developed as a pesticide. Several reports state that the main compound contained in Eucalyptus essential oil, namely 1,8 cineol (C10H18O) or Eucalyptol can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of two types of Eucalyptus oil formulations with nano scale on the growth of the fungus Phytophthora capsici in vitro. This study was conducted in the plant pathology laboratory, at Indonesian Spices and Medicinal Crops Research Institute (ISMCRI), from January 2021 to June 2022. Chemical analysis of eucalyptus oil formulations with nano scale using Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectroscopy methods. The antifungal assay was carried out by adding a formulation with a specific concentration on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) medium and measuring its effect on the growth of P. capsici. The result showed that the particle size of the two eucalyptus oil formulations with nano scale range between 139.87-150.4 nm. The main chemical components of Nano E. urophylla West Java (NE-JB) are alpha-Pinene (13.92%), Eucalyptol (29.17%), p-Cymene (6.03%), and glycerin (20.45%). In contrast, Nano E. grandis North Sumatra (NE-SU) consisted of (1R)-2,6,6-Trimethylbicyclo [3.1.1]hept-2-ene (17.80%), Eucalyptol (10.90%), p-Cymene (6.50%), L-alpha Terpineol (6.69%), and glycerin (39.67%). The NE-SU formulation showed the ability to inhibit the growth of P. capsici better than NE-JB. The percentage inhibition of NE-SU at the 1.5% concentration was 91.47% while NE-JB was only 33.5%.

Abstract. Pratiwi RA, Nurlaeni Y. 2021. The potency of Myrtaceae Family from Cibodas Botanic Gardens (Cianjur, Indonesia) as botanical pesticide. Biodiversitas 22: 4648-4664. Cibodas Botanic Gardens (CBG) is a biodiversity reservoir that can be explored for the discovery of new candidates for botanical pesticides. Myrtaceae has been reported to provide biological activity against pests or pathogens due to their essential oil contents. This research was conducted to inventory and categorize Myrtaceae collection in CBG that had the potency to be botanical pesticide. The list of Myrtaceae collection of CBG obtained from Unit Registration and Collection CBG per 2021. Database fulfilling regarding the bactericide/fungicide/herbicide/insecticide potency of the Myrtaceae of CBG’s collection was carried out through digital references search. Our result showed that there were 73 species of Myrtaceae (from 18 genera) that are potential to be botanical pesticide sources. There were 17 species that are considerably had a high potency. Most of them belong to the Eucalyptus and Melaleuca, followed by Backhousia, Leptospermum, Psidium, and Syzygium. The data resulted from this study is expected to serve as baseline information for further research about the formulation, efficacy, and conservation management of botanical pesticides from Myrtaceae for sustainable use. Furthermore, the development of biological pesticides is a step to improve the quality of Indonesian export products so as to increase national competitiveness in the globalization era nowadays.
