Antifragile planning

Abstract: We argue that antifragility is a valuable and contentful goal for planning. We present a possible definition and outline the tenets and essential properties of an antifragile planning and compare it with approaches of urban resilience. We further present an argument for the legitimacy of an antifragile planning, by exploring its possible conceptualisation in terms of the capability approach. Hence the recommendation to incorporate antifragility into planning practice and content.

“…The two taxonomies reported at the bottom of Table 1 report the region's reactiveness within a hierarchical discourse. Blečić and Cecchini [26], in particular, define "resilience" as a complement of a more comprehensive condition of regional recovery called "antifragility". The ability to withstand the adverse events determined by the shock, without being damaged disproportionately, is instead considered a complement of the resilience, described as "robustness".…”

“…Proposed by Taleb ( 2012 ), the concept can be applied (complementary to resilience) to spatial systems that not only withstand and recover from a shock but also benefit from it and thrive afterwards. There are at present emerging approaches in this field, focusing on the antifragility of the built environment and urban form (Sartorio et al, 2021 ), antifragile ecosystems (Equihua et al, 2020 ) and antifragile planning (Blečić & Cecchini, 2020 ). Integration of the latest societal challenges such as climate adaptation, environmental crisis, digital transformation, social inequalities, technological revolution, urban concentration and segregation and others (Brunetta & Caldarice, 2019 ).…”

“…Antifragility is the ability to respond to a crisis by transforming the business model, possibly improving performance (Blečić and Cecchini 2019 ; Conz and Magnani 2020 ). Antifragility can manifest itself in the three main phases of crisis management (Ramezani and Camarinha-Matos 2020 ): readiness , that is the phase preceding the disaster; response , that is the actions implemented during and immediately after the crisis; recovery , or the actions that are implemented post-crisis.…”
