Antifeedants against Acusta despesta from the Japanese Cedar, Cryptomeria japonica

Abstract: A ntifeedant, Cryptom eria japonica, Acusta despestaDuring our studies on the components in Japanese cedar, Cryptom eria japonica, we found that the crude methanol extract of C. japonica showed intense antifeeding activity against one snail species, A custa despesta, which is well-known as a pest o f many vegetables and crops. The active com ponents in the extract were separated into the hexane and ethyl acetate soluble fractions. From the active ethyl acetate soluble fraction, two norlignans, sequirin-C and ag… Show more

“…The diagnostic 1 H-and 13 C-NMR data, including two-dimensional NMR (H-H COSY and C-H COSY), mass spectra and specific rotation value enabled compound 1 to be identified as (+)-2,7(14),10-bisabolatrien-1-ol-4-one. All of the data were identical with those in the literature [8][9][10][11][12] for (1S,6R)-2,7(14),10-bisabolatrien-1-ol-4-one ( Fig. 3).…”

“…1) In Japan, a great deal of damage was done to crops by a plague of locusts about 120 years ago (1880-1884) in Hokkaido prefecture. 2) The Japanese cedar, Cryptomeria japonica (Taxodiaceae), a plant peculiar to Japan, has been vigorously studied, and such bioactivities as termiticidal, 3,4) antimite, 5,6) anti-fungal, 5) antifeeding against snail species, 7,8) repelling against a pill-bug 9) and inhibiting germination activities 10) have been reported.…”

“…2,3) The absolute structure of this compound, however, has not yet been proven, although its conˆguration at C-1 and C-6 has been reported to be of trans form from the coupling constant value ( J=9.7 Hz) in 1 H-NMR date. 1,3) Reported in this paper is the absolute conˆguration of (+)-2,7(14),10-bisabolatrien-1-ol-4-one that was determined by its conversion to the known compound, cryptomerione.…”

“…The hW of Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese cedar, sugi) contains NorL as predominant extractives (Ohashi et al 1990;Bito et al 2011), which consists exclusively of agatharesinol (AGA) and sequirin (SEQ) C ( Figure 1). These compounds are supposed to be involved in the expression of hW features such as color (Takahashi 1981(Takahashi , 1996Kuroda and Shimaji 1983;Takahashi and Mori 2006) and durability (Chen et al 2001;Kano et al 2004;Ohtani et al 2009). …”
