Antifeedant Activity of Anticopalic Acid Isolated from Vitex hemsleyi

Abstract: The known labdane-type diterpenoids anticopalic acid (1) and 3β-hydroxyanticopalic acid (2) were isolated from extracts of the aerial parts of Vitex hemsleyi Briq. (Labiatae). The acid 1 showed an antifeedant, dose-dependent activity against Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae). To our knowledge this is the fi rst report on the antifeedant activity of a labdane-type diterpene against S. frugiperda.

“…The larval stage lasts from 14 to 30 days, depending on temperature, and the insect reach more than 60 mm in length [ 55 ]. Larvae of this species are usually employed to test the effects of diverse chemical compounds and to develop crop management strategies such as in insecticide testing [ 56 , 57 , 58 ].…”

“…Spodoptera frugiperda eggs from laboratory strains were settled in moist filter paper in sealed Petri dishes (9 cm). Hatched larvae were reared on an artificial diet [ 56 , 57 ] at 27 ± 1 °C, > 70% relative humidity, and with a 12:12 photoperiod of light:dark.…”

“…The mixture of compounds 11 and 12 , as well as 13 and its acetate derivative ( 13a ), caused good S. frugiperda larval mortality (LC 50 = 10, 8, and 39 ppm, respectively) [22]. A labdane-type anticopalic acid ( 14 ) from Vitex hemsleyi showed an effective antifeedant dose of 90.6 ppm against sixth-instar S. frugiperda larvae [23]. Sterols isolated from the aerial parts of M. geometrizans (Cactaceae), including macdougallin ( 15 ), peniocerol ( 16 ), and a mixture of the two metabolites 15 : 16 (4:6), displayed a high toxicity towards S. frugiperda (LD 95 = 285, 125, and 135 ppm, respectively).…”
