Antidiabetic Properties of 2,5-Dihydroxy-4,3′-Di(β-D-Glucopyranosyloxy)-trans-Stilbene from Mulberry (Morus bombycisKoidzumi) Root in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: We investigated the antidiabetic properties of 2,5-dihydroxy-4,3-di(beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-trans-stilbene (DGTS) isolated from Morus bombycis Koidzumi in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The DGTS prevented the increase in aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and blood urea nitrogen levels in serum of diabetic rats. At doses of 200-800 mg/kg, DGTS improved hyperglycemia in the rats, and the hypoglycemic effect of DGTS was comparable to that of tolbutamide. The histological observa… Show more

“…In recent studies, mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves were found to have anti-atherosclerotic effects in low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor-deficient mice (Enkhmaa et al, 2005) and in vivo neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischemia (Kang et al, 2006). It has also been reported that 2,5-dihydroxy-4,3 -di(beta-d-glucopyranosyloxy)-trans-stilbene obtained from MB produces anti-diabetic effects in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (Heo et al, 2007). Furthermore, MB has long since been used as a traditional therapeutic remedy for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases, including RA.…”

“…Within the European market, herbal medicines represent an important pharmaceutical market with annual sales of US $7 billion (Mahady, 2001). Plants have long been used as therapeutic purposes, and many of the currently available drugs are directly or indirectly derived from plants (Heo et al, 2007). Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb.…”

“…Recently, mulberry juice has been shown to have the ability to reduce elevated plasma levels of lipid peroxide in mice loaded with water immersion restraint stress [17]. Active compounds have been separated from the mulberries that have antidiabetic properties [18]. Furthermore, anthocyanin-rich fruits have been described that show memory improvement efficacy in animal models [19].…”
