Antidiabetic Activity ofGnidia glaucaandDioscorea bulbifera: Potent Amylase and Glucosidase Inhibitors

Abstract: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder affecting about 220 million people worldwide. One of the most critical complications of diabetes is post-prandial hyper-glycemia (PPHG). Glucosidase inhibitor and α-amylase inhibitors are class of compounds that help in managing PPHG. Low-cost herbal treatment is recommended due to their lesser side effect for treatment of diabetes. Two plants with significant traditional therapeutic potential, namely, Gnidia glauca and Dioscorea bulbifera, were tested for their efficiency to i… Show more

“…Equilateral nanotriangles observed might be due to the halide ions in the reaction mixture as mentioned earlier [43]. Similar results obtained by Kumar et al, where AuNPs were synthesized employing an antidiabetic plant, Cassia auriculata thus provides strong rationale for synthesis of AuNPs by G. glauca, which we have recently reported as a potent antidiabetic plant [29,41].…”

“…α-Glucosidase inhibitor and α-amylase inhibitors help in managing post-prandial hyperglycemia 27 During the present study, it was observed that the three species of Swertia had very little α-amylase inhibitory activity (Table 3). But the methanolic extracts of all the three species inhibited α-glucosidase activity in a dose dependant manner.…”

“…This is attributable to the effect of Dioscorea bulbifera which has been shown to be a potent potentglucosidase and α-amylase inhibitor [21] which lowers the rate of glucose absorption through delayed carbohydrate digestion . It may also be due to the an extra pancreatic mechanism of inhibition of hepatic glucose production [22,23].…”
