Type 2 diabetes often leads to dislipidemia and abnormal activity of hepatic enzymes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antidiabetic and hypolipidemic properties of Rhus coriaria (R. coriaria) seed extrac on nicotinamide-streptozotocin induced type 2 diabetic mice. In this experimental study, 56 male Naval Medical Research Institute mice (30-35 g) were randomly separated into seven groups: control, diabetic group, diabetic mice treated with glibenclamide (0.25 mg/kg, as standard antidiabetic drug) or R. coriaria seed extract in doses of 200 and 300 mg/kg, and control groups received these two doses of extract orally for 28 days. Induction of diabetes was done by intraperitoneal injection of nicotinamide and streptozotocin. Ultimately, body weight of mice, blood levels of glucose, insulin, hepatic enzymes, leptin, and lipid profile were assayed. After induction of type 2 diabetes, level of glucose, cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase increased and level of insulin and high density lipoprotein decreased remarkably. Administration of both doses of extract decreased level of glucose and cholesterol significantly in diabetic mice. LDL level decreased in treated group with dose of 300 mg/kg of the extract. Although usage of the extract improved level of other lipid profiles, insulin and hepatic enzymes, changes weren't significant. This study showed R. coriaria seeds administration has a favorable effect in controlling some blood parameters in type 2 diabetes. Therefore it may be beneficial in the treatment of diabetes.

The present study was aimed to evaluate advanced glycation end products (AGEs) inhibitory activity of alcohol and hydro-alcohol extract (DAE and DHE) of Dillenia indica L. (Family: Dilleniaceae) and its potential in treatment of diabetic nephropathy by targeting markers of oxidative stress. D. indica was evaluated for its in vitro inhibitory activity against formation of AGEs by using bovine serum albumin. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats by streptozotocin (65 mg/kg i.p.) 15 min after nicotinamide (230 mg/kg, i.p.) administration. Diabetic rats were treated with different doses of extracts (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) to analyze their nephroprotective effect. Tissue antioxidant enzymes level was measured along with the formation of AGEs in kidney to assess the effect of D. indica in ameliorating oxidative stress. D. indica showed significant inhibition of AGEs formation in vitro. D. indica produced significant attenuation in the glycemic status, renal parameter, lipid profile and level of antioxidant enzymes proving efficacy in diabetic nephropathy. Moreover, D. indica produced significant reduction in the formation of AGEs in kidneys. The present study concludes that D. indica as a possible therapeutic agent against diabetic nephropathy.

The present study was aimed to evaluate the potential of petroleum ether and hydro‐alcoholic extract of Cucurbita pepo (CPE and CHE) in STZ‐induced diabetic nephropathy. GC‐MS analysis of CPE revealed the presence of different fatty acids, heterocyclic compounds, and so on. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal administration of STZ (65 mg/kg) for the development of diabetic nephropathy. After 30 days of STZ‐administration, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg of CPE and CHE were administered for 45 days. CPE and CHE significantly increased body weight, lowered blood glucose levels, and ameliorated kidney hypertrophy index in the STZ‐diabetic rats. The extract also decreased the levels of creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, total cholesterol, triglycerides, AGEs and albumin in urine, respectively. The results indicated that via amelioration oxidative stress and formation of AGEs, C. pepo produced significant nephroprotective effect in STZ‐ induced diabetic nephropathy in rats. Practical applications DN is a syndrome mainly characterized as increase in excretion of urine albumin, urea, uric acid, and creatinine; glomerular lesions and reduce glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in diabetics. Fruit and seeds of Cucurbita pepo have significant hypoglycemic and antioxidant activity. C. pepo possesses antioxidant, antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, and antiglycation activity and thus, exhibits a protective action in STZ‐induced diabetic nephropathy. Moreover, further work is necessary to elucidate in detail the mechanism of action of C. pepo at the cellular and molecular levels.
