Introduction. Catharanthus roseus (L.) is used in some countries to treat diabetes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypoglycemic activity of extracts from the flower, leaf, stem, and root in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Methods. Roots, leaves, flowers, and stems were separated to obtain organic and aqueous extracts. The blood glucose lowering activity of these extracts was determinate in healthy and alloxan-induced (75 mg/Kg) diabetic mice, after intraperitoneal administration (250 mg/Kg body weight). Blood samples were obtained and blood glucose levels were analyzed employing a glucometer. The data were statistically compared by ANOVA. The most active extract was fractioned. Phytochemical screen and chromatographic studies were also done. Results. The aqueous extracts from C. roseus reduced the blood glucose of both healthy and diabetic mice. The aqueous stem extract (250 mg/Kg) and its alkaloid-free fraction (300 mg/Kg) significantly (P < 0.05) reduced blood glucose in diabetic mice by 52.90 and 51.21%. Their hypoglycemic activity was comparable to tolbutamide (58.1%, P < 0.05). Conclusions. The best hypoglycemic activity was presented for the aqueous extracts and by alkaloid-free stem aqueous fraction. This fraction is formed by three polyphenols compounds.

Objective: To evaluate the possible antidepressant effects of alpha-terpineol in rodents. Material and Methods: Depression levels were analyzed by comparing the total immobility time presented by the animals of the experimental groups in the test session, using the Forced Swimming Test and the Tail Suspension Test. The parameters of locomotion (central, peripheral and total) and motor coordination were evaluated in the Open Field Test and in the Rota Rod Test, respectively. In the second stage, the involvement of the noradrenergic system in the antidepressant action of alpha-terpineol in Forced Swimming Test was investigated. Results and Discussion: After performing the experimental tests, it was observed that the animals that received alpha-terpineol had reduced immobility time in Forced Swimming Test and Tail Suspension Test, compared to the other groups. In the Open Field Test and Rota-rod, the mice showed, respectively, good exploratory activity and motor coordination during the tests. In addition, the study of the Noradrenergic System proved to be a promising mechanism used during its antidepressant action. Conclusion: In view of the results of the experimental tests, alpha-terpineol presented similar responses to those found in other monoterpenes investigated in the literature. Thus, it is shown as a promising antidepressant to be used clinically in humans, with less side effects and low production cost.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma investigação científica e tecnológica do monoterpeno (-)mirtenol quanto às suas atividades e aplicações, especialmente, no campo da psicofarmacologia. A prospecção científica foi realizada nas bases PubMed, Science Direct e Web of Science e a tecnológica nas bases INPI, USPTO, EPO e WIPO, sendo realizado um estudo bibliométrico dos últimos 10 anos. Foram encontrados 70 artigos que identificaram a atividade do mirtenol na biossíntese de compostos químicos, em plantas com ação farmacológica e na comprovação de efeito terapêutico, porém, somente quatro publicações eram relacionadas ao sistema nervoso central. Foram também identificadas 31 patentes, possibilitando verificar que este monoterpeno está sendo estudado em diversos países, dentre eles o Brasil, gerando invenções tecnológicas com aplicabilidade na biossíntese de compostos químicos, no tratamento de problemas respiratórios e como produto acaricida; entretanto, não foram encontrados registros patentários sobre aplicações farmacológicas do mirtenol relacionadas ao sistema nervoso central.Palavras chave: Prospecção.
