Anticorrosive and Microbial Inhibition Performance of a Coating Loaded with Andrographis paniculata on Stainless Steel in Seawater

Abstract: With the trend for green technology, the study focused on utilizing a forgotten herb to produce an eco-friendly coating. Andrographis paniculata or the kalmegh leaves extract (KLE) has been investigated for its abilities in retarding the corrosion process due to its excellent anti-oxidative and antimicrobial properties. Here, KLE was employed as a novel additive in coatings and formulations were made by varying its wt%: 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12. These were applied to stainless steel 316L immersed in seawater for up … Show more

“…The high values of K ads of PyQAs (1.6 × 10 4 ) and PiQAs (2.8 × 10 4 ) suggest their substantial adsorption capacity on the MS surface. According to the literature, the values of Δ G ads o in the order of −20 and −40 kJ mol –1 correspond to physisorption and chemisorption, respectively. ,, As shown in Table , the adsorption behavior of PyQAs and PiQAs molecules on the MS surface encompasses both physisorption and chemisorption, given the Δ G ads o values falling within the range from −20 to −40 kJ mol –1 . These findings align with the experimental data, affirming the formation of PyQAs and PiQAs films on the surface of MS in CO 2 - and H 2 S-saturated oilfield water.…”

“…Further, there is a report on SO 3 H Zn-Pc as a corrosion inhibitor, but for Al surfaces. The above-mentioned gaps are addressed in our work, which are the first ever reported for Cu surfaces and are compared with other ecofriendly , corrosion-inhibitor coatings. Experimental findings, along with adsorption studies, CDD, DOS, and XPS plots highlight the interactions that come to interplay during bonding due to electrostatic or van der Waals forces that are also missing in these reports.…”

“…An alternative method to prevent corrosion is the use of inhibitors. Some potential chemicals that have been applied to inhibit MIC include 1,8-dimethyl-1,3,6,8,10,13hexaazacyclotetradecane (Nwankwo et al 2016), chitosan/lignosulfonate nanospheres (Rasheed et al 2020), Andrographis paniculata or the kalmegh leaves extract (KLE) (Kamaruzzaman et al 2021), and tetrazolium violet. The latest has been applied as a corrosion inhibitor on copper-based materials exposed to sulfate-rich environments.…”
