“…Our results support other studies reporting that stressful manipulations in rodents decrease the convulsant potency of GABA-related compounds, suggesting an enhancement of the brain GABA system function (Soubrie et al 1980;Skerritt et al 1981;Schwartz et al 1987;Miller et al 1987;Abel and Berman 1993;Pericic et al 2000). Several authors have reported a release of neuroactive steroids in plasma and in the brain after various acute stressors in rats (Purdy et al 1991;Barbaccia et al 1996) and in mice (Mele et al 2004) consistent with the present results.…”

“…The finasteride dose used in the present experiment has been reported to cause a fall in plasma and in brain allopregnanolone levels in the order of 65-75% Rhodes and Frye 2001;Verleye et al 2005). Our observations are consistent with the previous studies of Reddy and Rogawski (2002) but differ from those of Pericic et al (2000). Indeed, the latter authors have shown that finasteride failed to affect the onset of convulsions of GABA-related compounds such as picrotoxin and pentylenetetrazole in mice (CBA strain).…”

“…Later studies in mice demonstrated that acute swim stress lowers the convulsive potency of GABA-related and some GABA-unrelated convulsants (Peričić et al 2001a). The anticonvulsant effect of stress could not be counteracted by flumazenil, an antagonist of benzodiazepine binding sites (Peričić and Bujas 1997), by adrenalectomy (Peričić et al1999), or by drugs interfering with the synthesis of steroids (Peričić et al 2000). However, the anticonvulsive effect of stress was reduced by yohimbine and idazoxan, two a 2 -adrenoceptor antagonists, and potentiated by clonidine, an a 2 -adrenoceptor agonist, suggesting that a 2 -adrenoceptors are involved in the anticonvulsive effect of swim stress in mice (Peričić et al 2001b).…”
