Anticipatory Mobile Computing

Abstract: Today’s mobile phones are far from the mere communication devices they were 10 years ago. Equipped with sophisticated sensors and advanced computing hardware, phones can be used to infer users’ location, activity, social setting, and more. As devices become increasingly intelligent, their capabilities evolve beyond inferring context to predicting it, and then reasoning and acting upon the predicted context. This article provides an overview of the current state of the art in mobile sensing and context predicti… Show more

“…In addition, Lee and Lee [2012] use the location prediction to support ubiquitous decision support. Rosa et al [2016] highlighted recent studies that discuss and classify works in research topics related to context prediction, such as anticipatory mobile computing [Pejovic and Musolesi 2015] and prediction in pervasive computing [Ameyed et al 2015]. These surveys present and compare context prediction techniques and propose solutions, particularly highlighting challenges and opportunities associated with this research field.…”

“…Anticipatory computing: Using your mobile as a crystal ball. Anticipatory mobile computing [56] builds on our current capabilities to sense, model, and even predict context to construct algorithms and mechanisms that enable automated decision making processes based on these sensing and prediction capabilities. Anticipatory computing applications have long been the holy grail of mobile and pervasive computing.…”

“…A number of recent survey articles investigated attention management systems indicating the rising importance of this field. The existing reviews incorporated concepts from cognitive sciences [96], or focused on technical realizations of anticipatory mobile computing, including interruptions as part of personalized interactions [83]. The survey of interruptibility prediction in ubiquitous systems by Turner et al is the one most related to our work.…”
