Anticipation-related brain connectivity in bipolar and unipolar depression: a graph theory approach

Abstract: Bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder, which leads to inadequate treatment. Depressed individuals versus healthy control subjects, show increased expectation of negative outcomes. Due to increased impulsivity and risk for mania, however, depressed individuals with bipolar disorder may differ from those with major depressive disorder in neural mechanisms underlying anticipation processes. Graph theory methods for neuroimaging data analysis allow the identification of connectivity b… Show more

“…MDD patients generally exhibit reduced sensitivity to reward; this cognitive blunting is reflected by reduced ventral CSTC loop activation in the orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate and ventral striatum to reward and loss receipt/anticipation (Smoski et al, 2011; Chantiluke et al, 2012; Schiller et al, 2013; Admon et al, 2015; Manelis et al, 2016). …”

“…35 Win/loss anticipation was mediated through distinct mechanisms in diseased and healthy individuals, with bottom-up striatal-frontal connectivity seen in MDD and frontostriatal top-down connectivity observed in the controls. 36 Furthermore, aberrant activation and connectivity of the reward network have also been shown to be associated with depressionrelated appetite loss/increase in the patients. 37…”

“…Recently, graph analysis using graph theoretical measures has been applied to explore brain network properties in individuals with psychiatric disorders (Bassett & Bullmore, ; He et al, ; Manelis et al, ; Wang, Wang, Jia, Zhong, Niu et al, ; Wang, Wang, Jia, Zhong, Zhong et al, ). Using graph analysis, the brain is modulated as a network of nodes (most commonly a priori defined regions) that are connected by edges resembling functional connections between these regions (Bassett & Bullmore, ).…”
