Anticardiolipin Antibodies in Migraine

Abstract: Antiphospholipid antibodies have occasionally been observed in small series of migraine patients, possibly signalling an immunological pathogenesis in a subgroup. We have measured anticardiolipin antibody levels in a series of 94 migraine patients (35 patients having migraine with aura, 59 without aura), during acute attacks and between attacks. Platelet counts were normal and VDRL was negative in all patients. A low positive anticardiolipin antibody level was found in only one patient, which was negative six … Show more

“…Studies performed on migraine patients and on patients with systemic lupus erythematosus [19. 20] did not suggest any specific association between migraine and aPLs [18], Moreover, we recently investi gated the prevalence of aPLs in a population of migraine patients attending our Migraine Outpatients Service. The presence of aCAs and/or LA was detected in only 3 out of 197 consecutive patients.…”

“…In particular, the wide number of descriptions of association of LA and aCAs with migraine has suggested their possible pathogenetic implication in vascular headache [13,[15][16][17], However, such a hypothesis has not been supported by recent inves tigations performed on migrainous patients [18] and on patients with systemic lupus erythematosus [19,20] that failed to show any specific association between migraine and aPLs. These conflicting results could be explained by the hypothesis that the association between aPLs and migraine concerns only a particular group of patients.…”
