Anticarcinogenic Effect of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer and Identification of Active Compounds

Abstract: The failure to improve the five-year survival rate of cancer patients, from one in three in the 1960s to one in two in the 1970s, stimulated awareness of the importance of primary prevention of cancer. Korean investigators carried out extensive long-term anticarcinogenicity experiments with 2000 newborn mice to investigate whether Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer inhibited carcinogenesis induced by several chemical carcinogens in 1978. There was a 22% decrease (p <0.05) in the incidence of urethane induced lung adenom… Show more

“…Indeed, the extract from Panax ginseng, which has a predominance of Rb1, exerted a preventive effect in multiple cancer models. 14 Similarly, American ginseng was found to synergize with breast cancer chemotherapeutic agents, 15 coinciding with the interpretation of our data. In contrast, Sanqi ginseng is considered the key ingredient for the treatment of trauma injuries and for promoting microcirculation, 16,17 which would be consistent with the proangiogenic activity of its predominant ginsenoside Rg1.…”

“…Chronic intake of P ginseng decreased the incidence of lung, gastric, liver and colorectal tumors. Rh2 and Rg3 suppressed breast, prostate, liver and intestinal cancer [11,[48][49][50][51][52][53] . The anti-proliferative effects of petroleum ether extract of P ginseng in cultured human renal cell carcinoma cell lines were demonstrated; even its potency was weaker than partially purified P ginseng preparation, panaxydol, and some as panazynol [54] .…”
