Anticancerous efficacy of ayurvedic milk extract of Semecarpus anacardium nuts on hepatocellular carcinoma in wistar rats

Abstract: The objective of the study was to determine the anticancerous efficacy of Ayurvedic preparation made of Semecarpus anacardium (SA) nuts. Five groups of rats were used for the study. Group I served as water control. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was induced in groups II, III and IV animals using N-nitrosodiethylamine as inducing agent followed by phenobarbitone as promoter for 13 weeks. “…However in extract treatment group decrease in LDH level is significant at p<0.05 when compared to positive control and this is due to controlled glycolysis and protection to membrane integrity offered by the extract. 29 Agreeing with these results, similar results were obtained by Premalatha B and team 30 in HCC induced rat treated with Siddha preparation of the nut milk extract. This indicates the usefulness of this plant for anticancer properties.…”

“…It also maintains normal physiological level of cyto-protective Glutathione enzyme (Mathivadhani et al, 2006), modulates tumor hypoxia associated factors (Panneerselvam Mathivadhani et al, 2007a) and extracellular matrix associated enzymes (P Mathivadhani et al, 2007b), leading to inhibition of tumor progression and metastasis in DMBA induced tumor bearing rats. Although, the milk of nut has reported to have anticancer property in hepatocellular carcinoma in wistar rats (Joice P Joseph et al, 2013). The nut extract is cytotoxic and induced cell death through apoptosis in breast cancer (T47D) cells by arresting the treated cells in G2/M phase (Panneerselvam Mathivadhani et al, 2007b).…”

“…Plant fruit part has been used in numerous Ayurvedic formulations since a time ago (Semalty et al, 2010). Recent studies have explored its various properties such as antioxidant (Ramprasath et al, 2005), antimicrobial (Purushothaman et al, 2017), hypoglycemic (Arul et al, 2004), anti-inflammatory (Khan et al, 2013), anticancerous (Joice P. Joseph et al, 2013), antiatherogenic (Semalty et al, 2010), etc. This study also advocate to the different properties of its nuts like antioxidant and cytotoxicity in cancer cells of breast, liver, lung, cervical and blood (Selvam et al, 2004; Semalty et al, 2010; Sharma et al, 1995).…”

“…The findings of the present study agree with the results of Joseph et al . [20] who evaluated the anticancerous efficacy of Ayurvedic milk extract of Semecarpus anacardium nuts on HCC in Wistar rats. Ayurvedic milk extract when administered showed a positive correlation with the action of doxorubicin.…”
