Anticancer and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Chitin and Chitosan Oligosaccharides

Abstract: Previous reports indicate that N-acetyl-d-glucosamine oligomers (chitin oligosaccharide; NACOS) and d-glucosamine oligomers (chitosan oligosaccharide; COS) have various biological activities, especially against cancer and inflammation. In this review, we have summarized the findings of previous investigations that have focused on anticancer or anti-inflammatory properties of NACOS and COS. Moreover, we have introduced recent evaluation of NACOS and COS as functional foods against cancer and inflammatory diseas… Show more

“…Traditionally, COS were widely used as functional materials for their biodegradability and adsorption properties. In the past decades, COS were also shown to possess different biological activities including antimicrobial activities, anti-tumor activities, antiinflammation, anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic effects and immuno-enhancing effects [6][7][8][9] . For example, COS can effectively protect HUVECs (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) against oxidative stress by H 2 O 2 through regulation of p38 MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways, which might be of importance in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases 10 .…”

“…The anti-inflammatory properties of chitosan and its derivatives have been described in a number of diseases (32). Although OA is conceptualized as a non-inflammatory disease, inflammatory cytokines serve a vital role in the breakdown of proteoglycan (33).…”

“…COS is a unique natural positively charged basic amino oligosaccharide. COS is involved in various biological activities, including antimicrobial, anti-tumor, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidative, anti-apoptotic, and immuno-enhancing effects [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. Our previous studies showed that carboxymethyl chitosan elicits protective effects to suppress IL-1β-induced apoptosis of rabbit chondrocytes.…”
