Anticancer activity of isolated compounds from twigs of Koelreuteria elegans cultivated in Egypt

Abstract: Phytochemical constituents have been participated with essential role in the discovery of several clinically effective anticancer agents. The goal of this study was to isolate phytoconstituents from Koelreuteria elegans twigs (Sapindacea family) and evaluate their anticancer activities against human lung, colon and breast cancer cell lines. The aqueous methanol extract of plant's twigs was fractionated with different solvents and the preliminary cytotoxicity of fractions was determined using brine shrimp letha… Show more

“…In addition, Kumar and Kaur [28] established the potential of those extracts to inhibit lipid peroxidation and 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO)-induced genotoxicity. In vitro cytotoxicity assay on another Koelreuteria species (K. elegans) showed the promising anticancer activity of two phenols (from butanol fraction), methyl gallate and austrobailignan, against MCF-7 cell lines, which also reduced the cell proliferation of it [29].…”

“…The term “phenolic acids” generally describes the phenolic compounds having one carboxylic acid group. 34 Numerous phenolic acids and their conjugates have been previously reported in K. elegans along with their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, 12,13,19,21,23 anti-cancer, 14,22 antimicrobial and hepatoprotective effects. 15 In this study, fifty-seven phenolic acids were tentatively identified, and they are mainly derivatives of hydroxybenzoic acids present as esters, glycosides, or glycoside-esters.…”

“…Previous phytochemical studies of K. elegans led to the detection of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, lignans, sterols, tocopherols and triterpenes. 11,14–21 Despite its potential as a producer of bioactive natural compounds, no studies are available on the anti-AD activity of K. elegans . The only study that discussed the anti-AD potential was conducted on Koelreuteria paniculata , 1 with the isolation and elucidation of five barrigenol-type triterpenoid compounds from the seeds of K. paniculata .…”
