Antibodies to Epstein‐Barr virus‐associated nuclear antigen and to other viral and non‐vical antigens in Hodgkin's Disease

Abstract: Antibody reactivity to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated nuclear antigen (EBNA) was investigated by means of the anticomplement immunofluorescence technique on sera from patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) and from appropriate controls. Antibody levels to other EBV-determined antigens, i.e. viral capsid (VCA) and early antigens (EA), and to measles and rubella viruses, to cytomegalovirus (CMV), and to toxoplasma gondii were also measured. The results of anti-EBV antibody titrations demonstrated that anti-VC… Show more

“…C-type RNA viruses have also been detected in tissues derived from Hodgkin's disease patients [16]. In addition, elevated antibody levels to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) have been report ed in patients with Hodgkin's disease as compared to healthy subjects [9,17]. However, no EBV DNA could be detected in Hodgkin's disease tissues by DNA-DNA hybridization [18].…”

“…Antibody studies also have been done to evaluate the relationship between EBV and HD. In studies of nearly 1,000 HD cases, the proportion with antibody to the viral capsid antigen (VCA), indicative of prior infection, has been quite similar to that of the controls Hirshaut et al, 1974;Goldman and Aisenberg, 1970;Levine et al, 1971;Carvalho et al, 1973;Langenhuysen et al, 1974;Rocchi et al, 1975). However, the cases have consistently had higher antibody titers.…”

“…Despite these positive findings, a large serological study of HL in young adults found no significant difference between the distributions of MV antibody titres in cases and controls. 23 A later casecontrol study of HL in young adults aged 15-24 years reported that the risk of developing HL was decreased in individuals with a past history of measles. 24 Case-control differences were significant for measles infection at all ages, measles infection at 5 years of age, and for non-EBV-associated cases (EBV2ve HL) compared to controls.…”
