Antibodies targeting enzyme inhibition as potential tools for research and drug development

Abstract: Antibodies have transformed biomedical research and are now being used for different experimental applications. Generally, the interaction of enzymes with their specific antibodies can lead to a reduction in their enzymatic activity. The effect of the antibody is dependent on its narrow i.e. the regions of the enzyme to which it is directed. The mechanism of this inhibition is rarely a direct combination of the antibodies with the catalytic site, but is rather due to steric hindrance, barring the substrate acc… Show more

“…Proteins on microbe surfaces, toxins, and other virulence factors can all be targets for antibodies. Enzyme areas crucial for microbial metabolism can also be targeted by antibody design, being able to influence the activity of antigen molecules without necessarily affecting the immune response (105).…”

“…Determination of the clinical dose range can be greatly facilitated by this method. 69 Biologics, particularly antibodies, are generally superior to peptides in terms of pharmacokinetics, 70,71 but may also offer other advantages, including ease of manufacture, targeting of key enzymes 72 and reduced activation of immune responses over time. 73 6.…”

“…Determination of the clinical dose range can be greatly facilitated by this method 69 . Biologics, particularly antibodies, are generally superior to peptides in terms of pharmacokinetics, 70,71 but may also offer other advantages, including ease of manufacture, targeting of key enzymes 72 and reduced activation of immune responses over time 73 Finally, it is important to consider the manufacturing costs of peptides and the purification procedures of high‐performance liquid chromatography, which are still relatively high compared with small molecules, although they continue to decrease with advances.…”

“…The primary physiological function of antibodies is to recognize and eliminate the antigen. However, antibodies are also capable of catalyzing specific chemical reactions [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Natural catalytic antibodies have been found in a variety of physiological and pathological conditions, including viral infections and autoimmune diseases [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ].…”
