Antibodies against Helicobacter pylori were detected in the cerebrospinal fluid obtained from patients with guillain‐barré syndrome

Abstract: We examined the antibodies against Helicobacter pylori proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 7 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Crude H. pylori antigens, fractionated heat shock protein (HSP), and urease B (UB) from H. pylori antigens were separated by SDS-PAGE. With Western blot analysis, four of seven CSF samples had several IgG antibodies against H. pylori proteins, including HSP and UB. No cross reactivity against Campylobacter jejuni was observed. These antibodies may be involved in the… Show more

“…The pathophysiological role of these antibodies against various types of HSPs in CSF is still unknown. Furthermore, the profile of CSF antibody against bacterial antigens was quite different from that of serum antibody derived from the same individual [4]. HSPs are abundantly and essentially expressed in almost all types of cells residing in the nervous system.…”

“…For instance, elevated antibody titers to HSP60 family proteins are reported in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurological diseases [1 -3]. Recently, we found the presence of antibodies against HSP60 homologue and vacuolating cytotoxin of Helicobacter pylori in CSF from patients with GuillainBarre syndrome (GBS) [4]. In addition, antibody titers against various types of HSPs including HSP60 and HSP70 families are found to be significantly high in CSF obtained from patients with GBS [5].…”

“…3 We have reported the presence of several IgG antibodies against crude H pylori antigens in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with GBS. 4 However, the nature of the antibody to the 90 kDa protein has not been identified. In this study, we determined the 90 kDa protein to be vacuolating cytotoxin (VacA) by Western blot analysis using recombinant (r)-VacA, and studied the clinical and electrophysiological features in patients with positive or negative antibody to r-VacA in CSF.…”

“…Campylobacter coli was also isolated from an AMAN patient [37], but C. coli isolates from two other GBS patients had neither ganglioside mimicry nor cross-reactivity with anti-ganglioside autoantibodies [38]. Helicobacter pylori has also been suggested as a possible cause of GBS [39,40], but it is unlikely that such a chronic infection would induce an acute and monophasic, immune-mediated condition. More stringent criteria are required to establish the true pathogenesis of the various micro-organisms that have been isolated in patients with GBS and its related conditions to avoid baseless reporting of causal infections in these conditions.…”
