Qingcaosha Reservoir is an important drinking water source in Shanghai. The occurrence of five groups of antibiotics was investigated in the surface water of this reservoir over a one-year period. Seventeen antibiotics were selected in this study based on their significant usage in China. Of these antibiotics, 16 were detected, while oxytetracycline was not detected in any sampling site. The detected frequency of tylosin was only 47.92% while the other 15 antibiotics were above 81.25%. The dominant antibiotic was different in four seasons: norfloxacin was dominant in spring, and penicillinV was dominant in summer, autumn and winter, with medium concentrations of 124.10 ng/L, 89.91 ng/L, 180.28 ng/L, and 216.43 ng/L, respectively. The concentrations and detection frequencies of antibiotics were notably higher in winter than in other seasons, demonstrating that low temperature and low flow may result in the persistence of antibiotics in the aquatic environment. Risk assessment suggested that norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, penicillinV, and doxycycline in the surface water presented high ecological risks.

RESUMOO uso indiscriminado de antibióticos na medicina humana e veterinária tem causado a contaminação frequente dos ambientes aquáticos. O objetivo desse trabalho foi realizar uma revisão de literatura identificando as possíveis rotas dos antibióticos nos ambientes aquáticos e determinar os possíveis impactos negativos desses fármacos nos ecossistemas aquáticos. A metodologia utilizada foi à busca de artigos científicos, dissertações e livros nos sites Google Acadêmico e Science Direct. Foram identificados diversos impactos negativos relacionados a contaminação do meio por antibióticos como o surgimento de bactérias resistentes, toxicidade para algas, macrófitas, microcrustáceos e peixes. A venda controlada de antibióticos surge como uma alternativa imediata que pode reduzir esses impactos. No entanto, são necessários estudos de monitoramento dessas substâncias nos ambientes aquáticos, ensaios de toxicidade que identifiquem seus possíveis efeitos na biota aquática, além da busca por sistemas de tratamento de efluentes domésticos e hospitalares que visem a eliminação desses fármacos. The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review identifying the possible routes of antibiotics in aquatic environments and to determine the possible negative effects of these pharmaceuticals on aquatic ecosystems. The methodology used was the search for scientific articles, dissertations and books in Google Scholar and Science Direct website. Negative impacts were identified related to contamination of the antibiotic as the emergence of resistant bacteria, toxicity to algae, macrophytes, microcrustaceans and fishes. The controlled sale of antibiotics emerges as an immediate alternative that can reduce these impacts. However, studies are needed to monitor these substances in aquatic environments, toxicity tests to identify their possible effects on aquatic biota, as well as search for treatment of domestic and hospital waste systems that aim to eliminate these drugs.KEY WORDS: Pharmaceuticals. Preparation of Activated Carbon from Herbal Residues and Kinetics of Cephalosporin Antibiotic Adsorption in Wastewater

In order to utilize the leftover materials from traditional Chinese medicine production and to remove antibiotics from wastewater, extracted herbal residues were used as raw materials to produce activated carbon. To keep a constant quality and adsorption ability across cephalosporin antibiotic samples, all samples were divided into rhizomes, fruits, and leaves to make activated carbon by step-wise carbonization and overheated steam activation. The three kinds of carbon were mixed in the optimal ratio of 5:4:2, which had homogeneity in quality with a high adsorption capacity. Maximum adsorption of the mixture to cefalexin and cefradine were 7.1 mg/g, and the mixture removed 84% of the antibiotics from treated wastewater. Approximately 90% of the antibiotics was desorbed after ultrasonic treatment of the distilled water-carbon mixture for 10 min, and a re-adsorption capacity of 80% was maintained for next use. The adsorption process is dominated by a pseudo-second order kinetic reaction, with two active sites binding to one antibiotic molecule. The rate-limiting step is an intra-particle diffusion process. The isothermal adsorption process conforms to Langmuir and Tempkin isotherm models, showing multilayer and physical adsorption. The activated carbon from herbal residues can adsorb a low concentration of antibiotics in wastewater and be recycled after ultrasonic treatment.
