Antibiotic susceptibility profile of Pediococcus spp. from diverse sources

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to assess the antibiotic susceptibility profile of Pediococcus strains from diverse sources. From a total of 115 dairy and non-dairy samples, 40 Pediococcus strains were isolated. Their biochemical and molecular characterization confirmed them as P. pentosaceus and P. acidilactici. All the 40 identified isolates were evaluated for antibiotic susceptibility using disc diffusion assay against a total of 20 antibiotics. The isolates exhibited varied range of responses towards the … Show more

“…In this respect, it is well known that many strains of Lactobacillus and Weissella are inherently resistant to vancomycin, a phenotype that has also been observed in pediococci . In fact, our isolates of pediococci were naturally tolerant not only to vancomycin, but also to cephalexin, erythromycin, and tetracycline, as previously reported . The only antibiotic that proved to be effective against the Pediococcus strains was chloramphenicol.…”

All LAB isolates were resistant to at least one of the aminoglycosides tested.…”

“…For assessment their safety, they were tested for susceptibility to ten antibiotics where they showed susceptibility or intermediate to seven antibiotics; the gram-positive spectrum antibiotic erythromycin, the broad-spectrum antibiotics tetracycline and the aminoglycosides gentamicin, amoxicillin and co-trimoxazole in addition to kanamycin and chloramphenicol these results are in agreement to previous results on LAB [48,49]. They all were resistant only three antibiotics; vancomycin in agreement to the results obtained by Singla et al [50] and Bhagat et al [45] in addition to ampicillin, ciprofloxacin.…”

“…Parallel resistance between beta-lactam antibiotics and Cephalosporins was reported by Grimm, (1984) [12] . Varied response among Cephalosporins was observed by different strains Pediococcus pentosaceus (Singla et al, 2018) [35] .The antibiogram profile shown by the isolate can be assumed to be reflective of the medication history of the feeding mother.…”
