Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a global health threat, which has elicited a high-level political declaration at the United Nations General Assembly, 2016. In response, member countries agreed to pay greater attention to the surveillance and implementation of antimicrobial stewardship. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control called for a review of AMR in Nigeria using a “One Health approach”. As anecdotal evidence suggests that food animal health and production rely heavily on antimicrobials, it becomes imperative to understand AMR trends in food animals and the environment. We reviewed previous studies to curate data and evaluate the contributions of food animals and the environment (2000–2016) to the AMR burden in Nigeria using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart focused on three areas: Antimicrobial resistance, residues, and antiseptics studies. Only one of the 48 antimicrobial studies did not report multidrug resistance. At least 18 bacterial spp. were found to be resistant to various locally available antimicrobials. All 16 residue studies reported high levels of drug residues either in the form of prevalence or concentration above the recommended international limit. Fourteen different “resistotypes” were found in some commonly used antiseptics. High levels of residues and AMR were found in food animals destined for the human food chain. High levels of residues and antimicrobials discharged into environments sustain the AMR pool. These had evolved into potential public health challenges that need attention. These findings constitute public health threats for Nigeria’s teeming population and require attention.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram positive facultative anaerobic microorganism that causes listeriosis in both animals and humans. The main route of infection has been identified to be by ingestion of food contaminated with the organism particularly those stored at refrigeration temperatures. This study was carried out to determine the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance profile of L. monocytogenes in salad vegetables and ready to eat vegetable salads sold in Zaria metropolis. A total of 355 samples were collected which included 250 salad vegetable samples and 105 samples of salad and coleslaw from food vending outlets within the metropolis. Confirmation of the isolates using conventional biochemical characterization showed that 14 (3.9%) of the total samples collected were positive for L. monocytogenes while 95.9% of the samples were positive for other Listeria spp. Distribution by sample type showed that 11 (4.7%) were positive for L. monocytogenes while 2 (4.4%) and 1 (1.7%) was observed in coleslaw and convention vegetable salads, respectively though the difference was not statistically significant (p value = 0.587). Cabbage and lettuce had the highest prevalence (8.5 and 6.2%, respectively) though this was not statistically significant (p value=0.517). Antibiotic susceptibility testing by disc diffusion method showed that 92.9% of the isolates were resistant to ampicillin while ciprofloxacin has the lowest resistance (14.3%). Antimicrobial resistance profile of the isolates revealed that they were all resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent. The study therefore shows that L. monocytogenes occur in salad vegetables and ready to eat salads sold in Zaria, Nigeria, therefore, adequate precaution should be taken in preparing these vegetables for both human and animal consumption. Also, the antimicrobial resistance pattern shown by the isolates is an indication that adequate measure need be taken to regulate drug use in both humans and animals in order to minimize the risk of increasing antimicrobial resistance.

Lístería spp. es un género bacteríano que se adapta fácílmente a cambíos ambíentales y a condícíones químícas y físícas, por eso no es sorprendente la aparícíón de resístencía a desínfectantes de uso frecuente en las índustrías de alímentos. La capacídad para adquírír genes de resístencía antímícrobíana a partír de otras especíes bacteríanas, hace que este género deba ser observado cuídadosamente desde el punto de vísta epídemíológíco.Aunque aún no se ha demostrado que el abuso de antímícrobíanos como promotores de crecímíento en la produccíón de anímales (vacas, cerdos y aves, entre otros), esté relacíonado dírectamente con el aumento de la resístencía antímícrobíana, es ínevítable llamar la atencíón sobre esta práctíca. En este artículo se hace una revísíón sobre la taxonomía, el serotípo, factores de vírulencía, el uso de antíbíótícos en la índustría y la resístencía antímícrobíana de Lístería spp.
