Antibiotic-Resistant Pathogenic Escherichia Coli Isolated from Rooftop Rainwater-Harvesting Tanks in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Abstract: Although many developing countries use harvested rainwater (HRW) for drinking and other household purposes, its quality is seldom monitored. Continuous assessment of the microbial quality of HRW would ensure the safety of users of such water. The current study investigated the prevalence of pathogenic Escherichia coli strains and their antimicrobial resistance patterns in HRW tanks in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Rainwater samples were collected weekly between June and September 2016 from 11 tanks in variou… Show more

“…aeruginosa isolates (n=2) had 8-drug resistance of two different patterns "Am-Ce-Cm-Ct-Cx-Nx-Pc-PT" and "Am-Ce-Cp-Ct-Cx-Nx-Pc-PT", and the E. coli isolates (n=3) showed 3 different patterns of resistance to antibiotics: 8-drug resistance "Am-Ce-Cm-Cp-Cx-Mp-Nx-Pc", 9-drug resistance "Am-Ce-Cp-Ct-Cx-Mp-Nx-Pc-PT" and 10-drug resistance "Am-Ce-Cp-Ct-Cx-Mp-Nx-Pc-PT-Tc" (Table 2). As per the report of Malema et al (2018), among the 100 pathogenic E. coli test isolates, 52% had multiple antibiotic resistance, of which 10 showed to 9 antibiotics, and 24 different MAR phenotypes have been identifi ed.…”

“…A high frequency of DEC in water samples could have indicated pollution. Several studies have reported a high prevalence of DEC in different aquatic bodies in South Africa 6,53 . Detection of DEC in water, particularly domestic waters, should be regarded…”

“…Almost 52% of the isolates showed resistance to multiple antibiotics. 31 Existing studies have highlighted hotspots for environmental contamination; food-animal production systems that are likely to harbour resistant organisms or promote transmission of Antibiotic Resistance. It can also increase the human rates of colonization with resistant commensal bacteria such as E. coli.…”
