Antibiotic resistance of Salmonella spp. isolates from pigs in the Czech Republic

Abstract: A total of 126 Salmonella spp. isolates from pigs belonging to 13 serotypes (Typhimurium, Derby, Infantis, Enteritidis, Agona, Kaapstad, London, Montevideo, Bredeney, Give, Oritamerin, Schwarzengrund and Tennessee) were tested for sensitivity to 14 antibiotics. Resistance to 1-8 antibiotics was demonstrated in 64 isolates (59.8%), classified into seven serotypes with the most frequent being Salmonella typhimurium (n = 54). S. typhimurium strains were found to be the most resistant to streptomycin (91.5%), sulp… Show more

“…isolated from poultry and poultry environments in Bangladesh. In present study, Salmonella strains isolated from poultry sources were commonly resistant against ampicilin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol and susceptible to nalidixic acid and gentamicin as found in several studies in Bangladesh (28,32,33,(35)(36)(37). However, resistance against gentamicin and streptomycin was absent in all strains and comparatively lower resistance was observed against a norfloxacin, nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin.…”

“…However, no isolate carrying any tested PMQR gene was confirmed in this study. Resistance patterns detected in this study in pork meat isolates are in accordance with a previous study conducted in the Czech Republic aimed at pigs (Sisak et al 2006). The overall high resistance to sulphonamides and tetracycline was revealed both in poultry and pork meat and is in accordance with other studies (Carramiñana et al 2004).…”

“…Resistant bacteria are not only found in hospitals, where a large amount of antibiotics are used, but also in farms and farm animal products. Occurrence of multi-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium strains isolated from pigs may serve as a good example (Sisak et al 2006). As a result, veterinary workers are expending considerable effort towards restricting or even prohibiting the use of antibiotics for non-therapeutic purposes -(Regulation (EC) No.…”
