Present study was conducted to determine the levels of Salmonella spp. mediated contamination in samples collected from poultry and poultry environments in Bangladesh and to determine the antibiotic resistance trait in those pathogens. A total of 300 samples were collected from five different sources (cloacal swab, intestinal fluid, egg surface, hand wash of chicken handler and soil of chicken market) and 80 (26.6%) samples were found to be contaminated with Salmonella spp. One hundred and fifty Salmonella strains were isolated among which, 91 were detected as S. enteriditis and 59 as S. typhimurium through morphological, biochemical and serological tests. Susceptibility of the isolates against 13 antimicrobials was tested, and resistance against chloramphenicol (30 ?g), erythromycin (15 ?g), ampicillin (10 ?g), riphampicin (5 ?g), cephalexin (15 ?g), cefixine (5 ?g), penicillin (10 ?g), tetracycline (30 ?g), norfloxacin (10 ?g), nalidixic acid (30 ?g) and ciprofloxacin (10 ?g) was found in 58%, 82%, 88%, 60%, 65%, 50%, 100%, 100%, 20%, 20% and 20% of the strains, consecutively. 76% isolates were found to be sensitive against gentamicin and 70% against streptomycin. Some of the isolates interestingly exhibited multiple-drug resistances against at least 6 to 10 antibiotics. The results indicated the higher resistance of Salmonella spp. against antibiotics which serving as a threat not only to poultry industry of Bangladesh but also possesses a serious threat to public and animal health. Myšková P., Karpíšková R. (2017) The EN ISO 6579/2002 guideline was used for the detection of Salmonella in retail poultry and pork meat in the Czech Republic in 2013 and 2014. The laboratory confirmed isolates were further typed (slide agglutination, phage typing, resistance to antimicrobial agents, PCR for the detection of selected genes encoding plasmid mediated quinolone resistance). Out of 176 poultry and 223 pork meat samples, 24 (13.6%) and 6 (2.7%) were positive for the detection of Salmonella spp., respectively. In Salmonella isolates from poultry, 14 serotypes were differentiated with S. indiana, S. enteritidis and S. 6,7:-:1,5 being the most common serotypes. S. typhimurium and its monophasic variant S. 4, [5],12:i:-were predominant in pork meat. The overall resistance to one antimicrobial agent at least was high in both groups of isolates -50% (poultry) and 71.4% (pork). No Salmonella isolate was confirmed to carry any of the selected PMQR genes. The study showed a higher prevalence of Salmonella in poultry, but pork meat also poses a risk to consumers.

ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity and toxicity for sperm cells of the natural substances gallic acid, methyl gallate, ethyl gallate, propyl gallate, octyl gallate, thymol, carvacrol and eugenol. The antibacterial activity of these natural substances and selected combinations of them against bacterial strains isolated from boar ejaculates was determined using the microdilution and macrodilution method in Mueller-Hinton broth. The most effective natural substances against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria included in our study were thymol and carvacrol with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 300-600 µg/ml. Gallic acid exhibited the best antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains (MIC values of 300-2400 µg/ml), whereas the ranges of MIC values against Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus sp. strains were higher. Octyl gallate exhibited stronger antibacterial activity against staphylococci and enterococci (MIC values of 18.8-75 µg/ml) than against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains with MIC values in the ranges of 300-600 µg/ml and 1200-2400 µg/ml, respectively. Thymol combined with carvacrol was the most effective combination against enterococci (MIC values of 75-300 : 150 thymol : carvacrol) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC values of 75-300 : 300 thymol : carvacrol), bacteria which are known to be frequently resistant to antimicrobials. Similar results were determined for the combination of carvacrol and eugenol against staphylococci and enterococci. The results of the combinations revealed more of an additive rather than a synergistic effect. Thymol and carvacrol were the most effective natural substances against the bacteria included in this study, with a low toxicity for sperm cells compared to other substances, suggesting their possible use for boar semen decontamination.
