Antibasal ganglia antibodies and their relevance to movement disorders

Abstract: Antibasal ganglia antibodies are relatively specific in identifying post-streptococcal neuropsychiatric disorders, which constitute a wider spectrum of movement disorders than previously recognized. Although their sensitivity in diagnosing Sydenham's chorea seems excellent, it is not yet possible to extrapolate this sensitivity to all the recently identified post-streptococcal neuropsychiatric disorders. The antigens targeted by these autoantibodies and their pathogenic importance are currently under investiga… Show more

“…Likewise, imaging (although usually morphologically normal) often shows volumetric enlargement of the basal ganglia, or occasionally overt basal ganglia lesions [24,31]. Regarding the immunopathogenesis, most attention has focused on humoral autoimmunity, particularly autoantibodies (recently critically reviewed) [32]. Although most investigators find anti-brain autoantibodies in patient serum, there has been disparity in the immune findings (partly related to differing methodologies) [33][34][35].…”

“…Cross-reacting autoantibodies were proposed to play a role in this process [11,13], and serum antibasal ganglia antibodies (ABGA) were suggested as a potential diagnostic marker in post-streptococcal neurological and psychiatric disorders [14,15].…”

“…AnAb (sometimes referred to as anti basal ganglia antibodies or ABGA) are autoantibodies that crossreact with human brain tissue, specifically with the basal ganglia nuclei, caudate and putamen. They may be ascertained by using both qualitative (Western blotting) and quantitative techniques (ELISA) (Martino & Giovannoni, 2004;Martino et al, 2007). Their presence indicates an ongoing auto-immune process (Martino et al, 2007).…”
