Antibacterial poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate)/agarose nanocomposite hydrogels with thermo-processability and self-healing

Abstract: Recently, Near-infrared (NIR)-induced photothermal killing of pathogenic bacteria has received considerable attention due to the increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria. In this paper, we report a simple aqueous solution-based strategy to construct an effective photothermal nanocomposite composed of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and agarose with thermo-processability, light triggered self-healing, and excellent antibacterial activity. Our experiments revealed that PEDOT… Show more

“…Thus, a conclusion can be made that the use of PEDOT:PSS without graphene negatively affects both the affinity of enzyme systems to the substrate and their cooperativity, and only the introduction of graphene into the composite enables compensating for the negative impact of PEDOT:PSS. This effect of PEDOT:PSS is the basis of works on its use as an antibacterial agent [29]. The slope of the calibration curve was associated with the biosensor's sensitivity which is related to the limit of detection.…”

“…In order to further illustrate the feasibility of redispersion, the mechanical and electrical properties of the PEDOT:PSS films were compared before and after healing. 20,21,47,48 In addition, since the treatment method of adding 5 wt% DMSO in PEDOT:PSS is widely used, this treatment method is also compared. 49 The healing property of PEDOT:PSS films in a circuit connected to LED bulbs have been studied ( Figure 5 and Video 1).…”

“…The resultant biohybrid film presented high antibacterial activity in respect to Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). The researchers [23] reported a simple strategy for creating an efficient photo thermal nanocomposite based on PEDOT:PSS and agarose. This nanocomposite shows high antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.…”
