Antibacterial Metabolites from Kiwi Endophytic Fungus Fusarium tricinctum, a Potential Biocontrol Strain for Kiwi Canker Disease

Abstract: Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) is a Gram-negative bacterium causing the kiwifruit canker disease, resulting in serious economic losses to the kiwifruit industry. This study investigated the use of an endophytic fungus, Fusarium tricinctum, obtained from the kiwi plant (Actinidia chinesis) as a potential biocontrol strain against the Psa. F. tricinctum showed an inhibition rate of 59.5% in vitro against Psa. Bioassay-guided isolation was conducted on the cultural broth of F. tricinctum and seven new … Show more

“…Therefore, the potential of using MBCAs goes beyond their direct action against the target phytopathogen, as several bioactive compounds can be obtained from them. For example, isobenzofuranones and isocoumarins obtained from the fungus Paraphaeosphaeria sporulosa and imidazole alkaloids obtained from Fusarium tricinctum , both fungal species extracted epiphytically from healthy kiwifruit plants, have demonstrated capacity to inhibit the growth of Psa in plate assays ( Chen et al., 2022 ; Ma et al., 2022 ; Ma et al., 2023 ). Other bioactive compounds extracted from the fungus Zopfiella sp.…”

“…such as Bacillus subtilis against avocado rot caused by Colletotrichum and Cercospora in South Africa, and Aureobasidium pullulans against pome rot caused by Penicillium , Botrytis , and Monilinia in Austria . Our group has been conducting biocontrol studies for a long period, several potential biocontrol strains and a number of antipathogenic metabolites have been obtained, which have made great contributions to the disease control of kiwi and potato. …”
